10 things to do in Búzios

Located 127 km from the city of Rio de Janeiro with more than 20 beaches, this old fishing port shot to fame in the 1960s after a visit by Brigitte Bardot. There’s lots to do there. Here is a list of the most interesting activities the town has to offer.

Surfing lessons on Geribá beach

The beach is worth a visit even if you don’t like radical sports. You can stretch out your towel, or hire a chair and sunshade to enjoy Búzios beach with its long stretch of sand. The water is icy, which is more than welcome in the summer heat.

Walk to Ferradurinha beach

The left end of Geribá leads through to Ferradurinha, one of the most beautiful beaches at Búzios. Access is via an alleyway that runs between some small houses and trees. The beach is very small, not much bigger than a swimming pool in the shape of a horseshoe.

Beach tour

The trolley bus ride around Búzios is one way of getting to know the beaches. The viewpoint at João Fernandes and the beach at Brava are some of the high points on the tour. The headland at Lagoinha, with its ancient rock formations, is also on the route.

Sunset at João Fernandes or on the beach at Armação

For those who like to enjoy the sunset over the sea, the beaches at João Fernandes or Armação have the best views.

Walk along the Orla Bardot seafront

With its picture postcard setting, the Orla Bardot is a very popular stretch of seafront in the late afternoon. It starts at the end of Rua das Pedras and, as well as the harbour with its boats at anchor, there are bronze sculptures of Brigitte Bardot, JK (former president Juscelino Kubitschek) and three fishermen.

Go window shopping on Rua das Pedras

In Búzios you will always find the latest in fashion, beachwear, souvenirs, casual clothes and exotic furniture. The main shopping street is Rua das Pedras in the centre of Búzios. Enter one of the galleries parallel to Rua das Pedras for an amazing view of the beach by night. There is an impressive range of restaurants and bars.

Try a traditional restaurant like Bar do Zé

Búzios has great restaurants. But a traditional restaurant that is popular in the city centre is the Bar do Zé. The cuisine is Mediterranean and the risottos are a speciality.

Watch the boats land with freshly-caught fish on Armação beach

In the morning on the Orla Bardot the fishermen return with their catch, in time to be served up for lunch.

Travel by water taxi from Ossos beach

Praia dos Ossos beach is beautiful for photos with its many boats, but is not a favourite for swimming. From here it is possible to get a water taxi to the beaches at Azeda and Azedinha.

Stand Up paddle at Azeda and Azedinha

To get to Azeda you need to follow the footpath from Praia dos Ossos beach or get a water taxi. On the beach people hire chairs, snorkelling and diving equipment. There are "roving bars” serving drinks and food, and a small stall selling açaí juice. If you cross Azeda, you get to the smaller beach of Azedinha which is great for kids. The water is crystal clear and there are no waves which is perfect for doing Stand Up Paddle and diving.
