Rio de Janeiro en amoureux

In Brazil, things seem to have their own special touch. So much so that, unlike the rest of the world, the most romantic day of the year is not 14 February, but in fact 12 June. It's extremely rare to find someone who knows about Valentine's Day, or why our "Valentine's Day" is in June. But that's okay . .. in the end, romance has nothing to do with dates, and romantic isn't just going out for a candlelight dinner, right ?

If you're here as a couple on these dates, there are unique ways of enjoying the destination. With passion.

Café of Love

Do you want to be teleported back to the late 19th century ? In the city centre since 1894, Confeitaria Colombo is the place to go for a memorable afternoon tea. The art nouveau atmosphere is signalled by gorgeous mirrors and stained glass, the upper gallery, the sounds of the piano and, of course, unforgettable delicacies.

Rua Gonçalves Dias, 32, city centre.

Invigorating walk

Facing the sea, the Pista Cláudio Coutinho walking trail – or "Caminho do Bem-te-vi" – is hidden inside a natural reserve, to the left of Vermelha Beach. The trip through the hillsides of Morro da Urca and Pão de Açúcar offers prime views of the sea cliffs, the ocean and the Atlantic Forest.

A sunny spot

Neighbours on the sand, the Riba and Azur kiosks embody the idea of a "pé limpo" bar (a simple but charming restaurant/bar) in the middle of the beach. The first does bonito with açaí in green coconut, refreshing pitchers of clericot, octopus and bean salad and shrimp with goat cheese salad. The second, featuring the celebrated chef Pedro de Artagão, has dishes to be shared such as moquecas inspired by Baía and appetizers traditional to Rio.

Pedalling on the water

The Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon is Rio's picture-perfect postcard. Around its shores, people run, walk, roller-skate, bicycle and even skateboard. But in its waters, the most fun thing – and the most romantic – is to go paddle boating. At first glance, it may sound juvenile, but the view is gorgeous. Simply land at the dock of Catacumba Park and slip away towards the Botanical Gardens, Copacabana and nooks and crannies that don't even have a name.

Instruction for two

Chef Manoela Zappa has created a welcoming space called Prosa na Cozinha. Here, cooking enthusiasts will feel right at home preparing recipes at daily gatherings lasting around three hours, in the afternoon and at night, normally with three dishes (entrée, main dish and dessert) and a wine pairing option.

Cliché sunset

It's not because this program appeals to every couple that you should miss the sunset at Arpoador, a collection of rocks, beach and calm ocean waters in Ipanema. From there, stop for fresh oysters and a cold beer (or glass of white wine) at the Canastra Bar.

Rua Jangadeiros, 42 – G, Ipanema.

Enchanting dinner

Shin Koike is the ambassador of Japanese cuisine in Brazil. At the elegant restaurant bearing his name, in addition to excellent sushi and sashimi, he prepares dishes such as teriyaki duck magret with foie gras and kaizen yaki, a mix of grilled seafood in ponzu sauce.

The last sip

Garoa arrived at Rio last summer. The charming lounge serves dozens of drinks, including original and classic recipes, to the sound of DJs. If you get hungry, a sausage board does the trick.

Closer to heaven

At the PortoBay Rio de Janeiro Hotel, in the rooftop bar, you can watch the magnificent sunset to the sound of Bossa Nova and a refreshing caipirinha or flute of champagne. The setting ? A spectacular panoramic view of the famous bay, with Copacabana beach in the foreground and Christ the Redeemer in the background. What more can you ask for ?

Av. Atlântica, 1500, Copacabana.
