The Algarve on Foot

For most visitors, the Algarve means sun and beaches, cocktails on the sand or by the poolside, delicious food and fun at all hours. But the Algarve is more than people think...

There are those who work hard to show that Portugal's biggest tourist destination is much more than sun and beaches, especially when it comes to tourism with an environmental side, or ecotourism.

For some enthusiasts, walks are an excellent way to discover an alternative Algarve that is closer to nature.

Throughout the whole area, official routes are marked and there is specific information and maps of the trails available: Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Monchique, Portimão, Ria Formosa, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo or Vila Real de Santo António, as well as Albufeira, provide trails that vary in difficulty and scenery type.

The trails can cover several kilometres, between small villages, riversides and streams, natural parks and forest areas.

As well as the landscapes, the routes enable you to see the flora and fauna that define the Algarve's landscape. This landscape varies depending on where you are.

You don't need any special equipment to do the trails — you just need to be in good shape !! It is important to follow the information on the leaflets that are provided for each trail. Following these instructions the trails provide a unique opportunity to be in touch with nature.
In the Albufeira area where the PortoBay Falésia hotel is located, there is a trail with three different options.

Leaving from three different points, they all lead to the Pederne Castle, a historical building built by Muslims in the 12th century. The walk is between 2.6 and 4 km, along the Ribeira de Quarteira and there is the chance to observe several species of plants, such as Olive trees or animals such as the Snowy egret or the Brazilian Porcupine, amongst many others.

Beyond Albufeira, the parishes of Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Tavira offer more trails.   More information on these trails is available from the reception at the PortoBay Falésia.
