The Cliff Bay hosts MasterChef Portugal
Flavours, colours and experiences from the island of Madeira . .. the 5th episode of the Portuguese version of the popular cooking programme was recorded on Madeira and The Cliff Bay hotel was the venue for a challenge put to 12 contestants.
Chef Benoît Sinthon, from the two Michelin-starred Il Gallo d’Oro restaurant, was the guest judge for the challenge which took place in this idyllic setting in the The Cliff Bay hotel gardens, with its amazing sea view over the bay of Funchal.
Alongside the regular chefs, Nuno Bergonse, Miguel Rocha Vieira and Rui Paula, Benoît Sinthon kept his contestants on their toes by testing their knowledge of the island's typical ingredients.
In addition to Benoît Sinthon, guest judges Roberto Santa Clara, then Executive Director of the Madeira Promotion Association and Chris Blandy, CEO of the Madeira Wine Company were also invited.
Before being put to the test, the contestants visited the Farmers Market, with its lush varieties of fruits and vegetables. In the Fish Market they were surprised by the sheer amount of fresh fish.
Chef Benoît Sinthon also steered them to the PortoBay Garden, to show them around and taste the fruit and vegetables used in the kitchens of PortoBay hotels in Madeira. In Porto da Cruz, in the north of the island, they visited the Engenhos do Norte and watched the process of making brandy, a key ingredient for the famous Madeira poncha, which they drank by the sea.
Limpets, snails, tuna, honey bread, pitangas and passion fruit were some of the products used to make up the menu consisting of a starter, main course and dessert. .. Find out here how the challenge went !!
